Chicago Deep Dish Four Cheese

So fine – judge me. But it’s a long drive from Llandudno to Cardiff and by the time I got home fast food was the order of the day. We had salad with it, so it’s not as shameful as it could have been, and I have fond memories of Chicago Town pizzas from my first year at university, so this was a trip down memory lane…

The Mediterranean Restaurant, Llandudno

It’s been a long day in Venue Cymru and I joined fellow exhibitors for a meal in the Mediterranean Restaurant, which they’d recommended having eaten there the previous night.

They sang the praises of the garlic mushrooms and the pizza; I foolishly ignored their advice and had a rather pleasant garlic bread to start (generously garlicky and buttery) followed by a frankly disappointing penne amatriciana with unsmoked bacon, over-blanched penne and no offer of parmesan or black pepper. The service was par (not above, not particularly below – but the basic minimum; they took our orders and our money in return for food). Four-hour car journey aside, I don’t think I’ll be back.

I’m in Llandudno with S for work, and we’ve found a nearby pub for grub after the long drive up from Cardiff.

It’s a lovely friendly little pub and just around the corner from our delightful B&B (all credit to S, who made the booking). We managed to order five minutes shy of the kitchen closing and the food was quick to the table as well as arriving in generous portions. It’s the first time I’ve ever had peas with a burger, but the service was cheerful and prompt which made it a quirky addition, rather than an oddity. Cardiff prices plus though – definitely a tourist joint.

J invited us around for dinner with her and M. She served lamb keema with a side of rice that had been cooked with cloves, cinnamon and garlic. It was delicious, and rather spicy despite the fact that she’d kindly omitted the chili she’d normally have included in deference to our fragile palates.

Fiery hot and super simple, this is ready in quarter of an hour. The only change I made to the BBC Good Food recipe was to add a side of rice as well as the pak choi, which we needed to complement the heat.

Grabbed in the rush to the train station after¬†doubling back once¬†to ensure that I arrived at the Students’ Union in time and crucially with the tickets for the gig. Blotting paper for very expensive bottles of cider in the Great Hall while watching the Wombats.
